ABOUT AFRO-INDUSTRIAL STYLE

Housing is being developed out of unconventional materials like containers, and from more conventional pre-colonization, raffia palm, and rammed earth to meet the needs of increasing population growth on the continent and housing deficits abroad (The UN expects Africa's population to grow to nearly 2.5 billion by 2050, meaning more than 25% of the world's population will be African). The industrial interior design style loves the art of exposed pipes, concrete, and metal. Its masculine tendencies are tamed with the use of ample texture. Moreover, oversized artwork, like pieces available here by Kwkeu Ananse, and cozy textiles are perfect additions. Furniture is often raw or unfinished and paired with antiques.

The sustainable “industrial” design revolution we see today—repurposing materials, building with intention, and honoring raw elements—has always existed across the African continent. Long before colonization or the Transatlantic Slave Trade, African communities built with earth, fiber, and stone—structures that breathed with nature and reflected deep ecological wisdom. Now, as we face a global housing crisis and Africa’s population is expected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050 (over 25% of the world’s population), we are witnessing a return to these roots. From rammed earth to raffia palm homes and converted containers, a "new" (or re-envisioned) wave of building is emerging that is ancient yet feels current and urgent.

Afro-Industrial interior design honors this lineage. It celebrates exposed structure—pipes, concrete, metal—and pairs it with raw, natural textures that soften and humanize the space. The look is grounded and masculine, yet elevated by the use of cozy textiles and oversized artwork, like pieces by Kweku Ananse, featured here. Furniture is often unfinished or reclaimed, layered with antiques and artifacts that speak to a past that refuses to be erased. In embracing this style, we don’t just follow a trend—we reflect on where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re headed.
